Tips to find the perfect career counsellor.
You may need to talk to a career professional when choosing a new job, deciding whether to change careers, advancing in your current career, job hunting, or when you have career related issues.
There are so many people out there offering career services, how do you decide on who is right for you?
Five tips to choosing a suitable career counsellor :
Tip 1 : Get recommendations from people you know; check out the Career Development Association of Australia *(CDAA); and conduct an internet search for career coaching or counselling in your area.
Tip 2 : Check the person’s credentials. The career coach you choose should be a member of CDAA. Also check their education if it is important to you that the career coach is tertiary qualified.
Tip 3 : Talk to the person on the phone before hiring him or her. The most important factor in selecting a career coach is the chemistry between you and that person. This is someone you will be sharing personal information with and working closely with to achieve your career goals.
Tip 4 : Ask the career coach how they will help you and avoid coaches who over-promise or say they will take care of everything for you; after all, this is your career. The process is a two-way street and hiring a coach won’t magically set you on the right path.
Tip 5 : To reap the benefits of career coaching you need to be active, engaged and willing to accept feedback, with realistic expectations about your goals.
