Case Study | Overcoming career uncertainty to find the right path forward

career uncertainty

Uncertainty over finding the right career path can be overwhelming.

In the case study below, Sydney career coach Therese Rahme explains she helped a client overcome career uncertainty by exploring their interests, abilities and motivations to identify suitable study and career pathways.

Choosing a career path can feel overwhelming, particularly when there are so many possibilities and increasing pressure to make the “right” decision.

One of my clients came to me seeking clarity about their future, uncertain which direction would best align with their interests, strengths and aspirations.

Exploring you as a “person”

Examining interests, abilities and motivations.

Rather than focusing solely on career options, we began by exploring who they were as a person.

Using the Morrisby Career Assessment alongside reflective coaching conversations, we examined their interests, abilities, motivations and preferred learning environment. Together, we explored how these insights connected to potential study pathways and future careers.

As we researched different occupations, we looked beyond job titles to understand the realities of each profession, the education required, future employment opportunities and the day-to-day nature of the work.

This process enabled my client to make informed decisions based on self-awareness rather than assumptions or external expectations.

Career uncertainty turned into career confidence

The client developed an understanding of the pathways available to them.

Over time, uncertainty gave way to confidence. The client developed a clearer understanding of the pathways available to them and felt empowered to make decisions that reflected both their strengths and their long-term goals.

Instead of feeling pressured to have all the answers immediately, they recognised that career development is a journey, one that begins with understanding yourself.

For students and young adults, career coaching is not about choosing a job for life. It is about building the confidence, self-awareness and decision-making skills that create a strong foundation for the future.
