Case Study | Coaching for career progression with meaningful direction

career progression

Helping a client find clarity, recognise her strengths and pursue more meaningful career progression.

In the case study below, Sydney career coach Therese Rahme explains how personalised coaching helped an experienced professional clarify her career progression and begin building a coaching practice aligned with her strengths, experience and values.

Some careers reach a point where success is no longer measured by promotion or job title, but by finding work that feels meaningful and aligned with who you are. This was the position one of my clients found herself in after a successful career in Learning and Development and Talent Management.

The number of career possibilities had become overwhelming.

She had invested significantly in her professional development, completing coaching qualifications and considering several possible career directions. Although each opportunity held some appeal, the number of possibilities had become overwhelming. Rather than creating clarity, they left her questioning where to focus her energy and how to move from continued learning to meaningful action.

Finding career clarity among the possibilities

Our coaching focused on stepping back from the noise and reconnecting with what came most naturally to her.

Through reflective coaching conversations and strengths-based exploration, we identified recurring themes that had been present throughout her career. These included developing people, building meaningful relationships, facilitating growth and helping others recognise their potential.

Career clarity began with recognising the strengths that had shaped her success throughout her career.

Rather than encouraging her to continue collecting qualifications or pursuing multiple opportunities, we focused on building confidence in the strengths she already possessed.

Together, we considered how these strengths, combined with her professional experience and personal values, could form the foundation of a rewarding coaching practice.

Moving from career exploration to career action

By the end of our work together, she had greater clarity about the direction she wanted to pursue, a stronger understanding of the distinctive value she could offer and renewed confidence to begin taking practical steps towards the coaching career she had been considering for some time.

Sometimes career progression means creating work that feels meaninful and fulfilling.

Her experience demonstrates that career progression does not always involve moving into a more senior position or following a conventional path. Sometimes, it means using your existing strengths and experience in a new way to create work that feels more meaningful and personally fulfilling.

Career clarity is not always about discovering something completely new. Often, it comes from recognising the strengths that have been guiding you all along and developing the confidence to build your future around them.
