Helping clients to overcome career self-doubt.
In the case study below, Sydney career coach Therese Rahme explains how she helped two clients to overcome the self-doubt that was holding back their career success.
Every person brings unique strengths, perspectives and ways of thinking to the workplace. For some, those differences have been recognised and supported throughout their lives. For others, they have led to years of feeling misunderstood, underestimated or uncertain about where they belong.
Two clients, different backgrounds, one common thread.
A new perspective shed light on their life and career experiences.
Two of clients reached out to me from very different backgrounds, yet their experiences shared a common thread.
One was living with disability and wanted to find meaningful employment that reflected their abilities rather than their limitations. The other was an exceptionally intelligent professional who had spent years feeling different, questioning why certain aspects of work felt far more challenging than they seemed for others.
Through further professional assessment, they came to understand that they were neurodivergent, providing a new perspective on many of their life and career experiences.
Recognising your strengths and building self awareness.
For both clients, self-doubt was clouding their unique qualities.
While their circumstances were different, both clients arrived carrying self-doubt. They had begun to measure themselves against conventional expectations rather than recognising the unique qualities they brought to the workplace.
Our coaching focused on understanding the whole person. Through reflective conversations, strengths-based coaching and practical career planning, we explored their interests, values, natural talents and preferred ways of working. Together, we identified environments where they could thrive, developed strategies to navigate challenges and built confidence by focusing on what they did well rather than what they believed they lacked.
Creating a career that reflects who you are.
Something shifted when they recognised their overlooked strengths.
As they gained greater self-awareness, something important shifted. They stopped seeing themselves through the lens of limitation and began recognising the strengths they had overlooked for years. Qualities such as creativity, innovative thinking, deep focus, problem-solving, empathy and resilience became the foundation for making informed career decisions and pursuing opportunities that aligned with who they were.
By the end of their coaching journeys, both clients had moved beyond simply looking for employment. They had developed a deeper understanding of themselves, renewed confidence in their abilities and a clearer vision for meaningful work that reflected their strengths, values and potential.
I believe meaningful careers are built by understanding the individual behind the résumé. Whether someone is living with disability, is neurodivergent, or simply feels they have never quite fitted the traditional mould, coaching provides a supportive space to recognise strengths, build confidence and create a career that honours who they are.
